Croydon centre can be a bit of desert as far as pubs are concerned, with rather too many loud and laddish bars.
The Spread Eagle is an exception: it's a decent boozer, centrally placed along the High Street. It has the full range of Fuller's real ales, with a reasonable range of sandwiches and other typical pub grub. Staff are friendly though could be a tad more efficient.
Formerly a bank, the 1890's exterior is a dignified example of 'banker's classical' architecture, and the inside is spacious with wood panelling, high ceilings and an imposing staircase leading to an upstairs function-room.
As you'd expect for a town centre pub, it has a wide range of clientele, though is reasonably quiet most lunchtimes. It has sports TV and is probably best avoided during big footie matches, but otherwise is a dependable venue. The ground floor is fully wheel-chair accessible.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mokun S.Stepney Green, Londra, Regno Unito1118268 ago 2014
This place is like a private club and also kind of backstage of a theatre! I like everything here! There are a lot of historical pictures and documents hang on the wall. You really should try their pork sandwich! It's delicious!

What can I say
Having grown up from age 11 going to school in Croydon we were the cru that graduated from Black Sheep, Blue Orchid and Wig & Pen to Casa and Atlantis on the weekends... then Edwards before it got hood, Tiger Tiger wiping out all the competition...
Anyway nowadays all I want is a boozer with friendly staff where u can meet for a chat, watch the footy and have a wide selection of dranks - job done, food is decent too (Fullers standard but the specials always have interesting ingredients too)
having exclusive use of the members room also makes it a favourite - serious scheming has occured up in here!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Lauren V.Londra, Regno Unito27869316023 mar 2012Recensione aggiornata
We went to the movie night last Monday and were really impressed - I had no idea how big this place is! The tucked away club room upstairs has a huge screen and projector and great sound system. There's no interference from bar noise or people walking by due to its location (well, we could hear the bells from the clock tower next door, but sort of added to the ambience of our suspense movie).
My husband and I were the only movie watchers; I don't know if it's always dead or just an unpopular movie (Straw Dogs during their Dustin Hoffman themed month).
We had dinner while we watched and again was impressed with the quality, variety and service. Will definitely come back again to watch a flick.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 07 mar 2012Recensione precedenteThis place is freaking gem when it comes to dining and service in Croydon. The spacious pub looks unassuming, but the menu is a nice little surprise, with a variety of pub favorites as well as non-pub grub like quiche, veggie-friendly meals and salads. The portions are big and the quality is good.
The staff is friendly as hell, and there is free wi-fi and a weekly movie night (Monday I think) that is themed by month (recently it was 2010 Oscar Best Picture nominees).
They have several screens around the large space (including a second level) that usually offers sporting events. Seating is a mix of tall bar tables, leather couches and regular dining tables.
I don't know how to explain it other than I just really like it - it's no-fuss, it's consistent, it's quality and it's chav-free (a real accomplishment for a football-friendly pub in Croydon). It won't knock your socks off, but it will deliver a damn good lunch and a nice cold beer when you need it.
Whew, I can't believe I got through that without a single joke about the name. - James K.Elizabethtown, Stati Uniti0116 mar 2017
A decent pub with a good drink selection. It's a larger venue and they have a cool "movie night". It's a good place for some quick food as well. My experience with the service hasn't been that great, but it is still an okay pub.

The Spread Eagle is another popular destination for workers and locals alike. The pub has a lovely 'old' feel to it and the dim lighting makes for a chilled quick drink with the mates. I believe they also cater for parties too so great for Christmas!

Great atmosphere, great food. I really like the steak here which is probably one of the beat I have had. The decor is also very nice and it looks indeed like a theatre's backstage, so a very appropriate name. Happy New Year!

This is my "Cheers" pub whenever I'm in Croydon. I just take a spot and the best meal off the special gets sent my way by the lovely Janet and Robin. One time I got a steak pie and on another, seafood paella. Everyone is friendly and it's in such a perfect location I could just walk to La Tasca, or Nando's, and Tiger Tiger when I get bored of being comfy and being well taken care of at The Spreadeagle. Do they normally have karaoke here or is it exclusive for the staff after closing shop at midnight?

This is a nice enough pub. The pies are good, a nice range of ales and a convenient outside area. Quite a lot of seating is available upstairs.
